The MARRI Regional Centre, under the Presidency-in-Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), organised the Regional Workshop on Strengthening Risk Analysis, Data Exchange, and Early Warning Systems on 20–21 May 2026 in Skopje, North Macedonia. The workshop gathered representatives of the MARRI Participants administrations and experts from Frontex and the Ministry of Interior of Slovenia to exchange experiences, discuss emerging migration-related risks and strengthen regional cooperation in the field of risk analysis and integrated border management.
The workshop was opened by Angela Boranieva, Director of the MARRI Regional Centre, Anthony Sequeira, Sub-regional Programme Manager at IOM, and Dr. Ankica Tomic, Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to MARRI RC, on behalf of the MARRI Presidency-in-Office.
During the first day, participants focused on the strategic framework for risk analysis within the context of the EU Integrated Border Management concept and the role of risk analysis in addressing evolving migration challenges. MARRI administrations also presented their domestic models, current practices and challenges in the field of migration risk analysis, enabling a comprehensive regional overview and exchange of experiences.
Particular attention was dedicated to migration trends and shared regional risks. Presentations delivered by Frontex and IOM provided participants with an overview of current migration dynamics affecting the Western Balkans region and broader European context. The discussions highlighted the importance of timely information exchange, coordinated responses and stronger regional cooperation in addressing complex migration-related developments.
The second day focused on applied approaches to risk analysis and the implementation of the Common Integrated Risk Analysis Model (CIRAM 2.1) methodology. Frontex experts introduced the updated CIRAM 2.1, while representative from Slovenia shared practical experiences related to its implementation. The facilitated discussions involving certified trainers from MARRI administrations provided an opportunity for peer exchange on operational practices, methodologies and challenges.
The workshop also addressed elements of early warning systems, with discussions focusing on regulatory frameworks, preparedness and coordination mechanisms. Through working group sessions, participants exchanged experiences on data exchange practices, common risk indicators and operational cooperation among MARRI administrations.
The event concluded with a plenary discussion on strengthening regional cooperation and identifying follow-up actions. The workshop reaffirmed the importance of continued regional dialogue, practical cooperation and joint efforts in addressing migration-related risks and challenges in the Western Balkan region.
