On 9 October 2024 in Skopje, MARRI RC Director Snezana Trajanovska, MSc, participated as a panellist at the conference “Climate Migration in the Western Balkans: Legal Framework and Security”, hosted by Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (UKIM) – Global Changes Centre (Research Unit at the Faculty of Philosophy). The event was organised under the auspices of the project ” University Dialogue with Western Balkans “, implemented by Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), the Institute of International Politics and Economics (IIPE), and Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (UKIM) – Global Changes Center, with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
In her keynote speech, Director Trajanovska emphasized the importance of regional cooperation as a key driver for sustainable migration management, particularly in tackling the complex challenges that climate change presents for border management and migration.
Director Trajanovska also attended the follow-up event on 14 October 2024 at the Institute for International Politics and Economy (IIPE) in Belgrade. This panel discussion gathered researchers, experts, teachers, and students to explore the normative and security aspects of climate migration, along with demographic factors and economic policies that shape contemporary attitudes toward migration.
On the margins of the event, Director Trajanovska met with IIPE Director Prof. Dr. Branislav Djordjevic and Deputy Director Dr. Ivona Ladjevac. They exchanged views on pressing migration-related challenges in the Western Balkans related to climate change and agreed that these issues warrant increased attention moving forward.
