Gender-based violence (GBV) refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their sex and gender. It stems from unequal power relationships and systemic discrimination rooted in societal norms and expectations regarding gender roles. GBV encompasses physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence and can occur in both private and public spheres. It is rooted in gender inequality and arises from and reinforces unequal power relations. GBV is recognized as a violation of human rights and a criminal act, highlighting the urgent need for prevention, protection, and accountability mechanisms.

The regional conference aims to raise awareness of GBV as a critical issue in migration contexts; to highlight that migration experiences are deeply influenced by gender and shaped by underlying gender inequalities; to share best practices and experiences for prevention and response; increase awareness and advocacy to foster collaboration among stakeholders; and to develop actionable recommendations for policymakers and practitioners to address GBV in migration.

The conference is supported by Hilfswerk International within the framework of the Project: „Strengthening migration management, asylum and return processes in the Western Balkans“. This project is co-financed by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior.
